Methodology

Where we read first.

Every place on Gatto is read first. We pull mentions from 1,200+ publications. The heavyweights below carry the most weight in our Signal Index. Editorial track record matters more than reach.

Press & guides

The publications we weight most.

Independent press and expert guides, read by our editorial team and weighted by track record, recency, and contextual fit.

Authority social

Creators with proven judgement.

We weight signal, not noise. A TikTok with 500 views from a critic with a 10-year track record beats a 5M-view post from someone who'll review anything.

Signal Index pulls from TikTok and YouTube accounts with a consistent editorial line. They're cross-referenced against press mentions to surface true judgement, not viral noise.

What we don't use

What's not in the signal.

  • Anonymous UGC ratings (Google, TripAdvisor), used as a sanity check only, never as a ranking input. A place can be must-visit with 4.2★, a tourist trap with 4.8.

  • Sponsored content. We filter detectable sponsorships out. If a piece is paid, it's excluded from the weight.

  • Generic listicles. "10 best Italian restaurants in the world" pieces are too coarse to weight. We focus on city-specific editorial.

How we weight

Track record, recency, fit.

A source's weight in Signal Index comes from three factors: (1) its editorial track record, how often its picks hold up over years; (2) the recency of the mention, a 2024 Michelin star outweighs a 2017 listicle; (3) the contextual fit, a local Paris critic carries more weight on Paris places than a global guide.
