Creative Cocktail Bars in Lille

Lille is a beer city, and it owns it. But over the past fifteen years a real cocktail scene has taken hold, concentrated on three streets of the Vieux-Lille (rue Royale, rue Saint-André, rue de Gand) with a few outliers in Lille-Centre. What these bars share is not luxury, it is a point of view. Each one has an angle, and sticks to it.

Three houses sum up the moment. Joker, on place Louise de Bettignies, makes its own juices, syrups, purées and infusions in season, and it is the Lille name the specialist cocktail press quotes most often. Kolor Bar, on rue Saint-André, was voted the most unusual bar in France by Paris Nuit magazine, on the strength of a decor saturated with eighties and nineties pop references. And Shelby Bar, right in Lille-Centre, makes you pick up the right telephone before the door swings open, in the purest speakeasy tradition.

The rest of the list reads like a menu of moods. Genever for gin, with some thirty bottles and bartenders who have you smell them first. Le Farafina for rum, a rum bar facing the Théâtre Sébastopol for more than twenty-five years. Quai Des Bananas for its sprawling list and big-group nights. Le Charlatan for a made-to-measure prescription. Noao for cocktails served at three different alcohol levels, zero included. And two rising names, Le Dandy and DROPS, where the mixing is precise rather than showy.
