Creperie Broceliande - Damn Fine Crepes in Montmartre

Any time I have visitors in Paris, I want to make sure their experience is as authentic as possible. Seeing American tourists at Hard Rock Café on rue Montmartre makes me cringe…why travel at all, if not to experience the new and unexpected? When Taylor and Bianca, two of my good friends from college, came to visit for a spontaneous Parisian vacation, I was thrilled to be with them as they discovered the city of lights. Of course, one of my top priorities was to share my love of French food and the French dining culture. Of course, no French culinary experience would be complete without a few crêpes…so on Wednesday we headed to Crêperie Broceliande in Montmartre for a casual Breton dinner. We had made a reservation (the crêperie was packed, even on a Wednesday) and were immediately welcomed by a friendly, smiling staff…a rare treat in Paris! Our server was happy to speak English, but she was also patient when my friends wanted to practice their French. Crêperie Broceliande is a small and cozy Parisian restaurant with typical Breton decor–red checkered tablecloths, wooden chairs, and tables so close together that you’re basically forced to interact with your table mates. We took our time browsing the extensive galette menu…there were so many options! Galettes are essentially savory crêpes. They’re made from a different batter but have the same thin, pancake-like consistency. The traditional “galette complete” comes with ham, egg, and cheese inside, but of course there are countless variations…galettes with salmon, goat cheese, sausage, chicken…any combination possible! Crêperies are usually great options for French dining on a budget, and Crêperie Broceliande is no exception. The galettes range from 6-12 euros, and they’re very filling! Crêperies are also a sneaky way for those of us who are calorie-conscious to enjoy French food. Since typical French food is loaded with butter, cream, and the fattiest meats, it can be a challenge to find an authentic French recipe that’s also relatively healthy. The galette itself isn’t that “bad,” and when you choose the filling wisely, it’s possible to have a meal that’s not terribly “gras.” I went for a simple 2-ingredient galette with egg and ham and a small salad on the side. I did my best to avoid the butter…but of course it made the galette even more delicious. Galettes are so simple to prepare, even at home, since in France you can buy the actual galette pre-prepared in the grocery store. Despite their simplicity, though, they’ve still become one of my favorite French foods. Bianca had a galette with goat cheese, honey, and nuts (first photo), while Taylor let his German side out with a sausage-based galette. We were all very satisfied after our galettes and cider, the traditional Breton drink to accompany a galette meal. Naturally, though, we couldn’t resist the dessert crêpes! I tried to minimize the damage with a simple lemon and sugar filling, while Taylor and Bianca shared a DELICIOUS crêpe flambéed with rum and banana. We were too busy stuffing ourselves and forgot to take pictures…oops! Even with the desserts and cider, the entire meal was under 15 euro per person which, for Paris, is beyond reasonable. Despite the busy atmosphere, we never felt pressured to hurry through our meal and were able to take our time and savor the last rays of sunshine billowing in through the open courtyard window. We were stuffed by the time we left, but luckily an evening walk through hilly Montmartre helped with the digestion process! Crêperie Broceliande may be in a tourist neighborhood, but it isn’t a tourist trap. It absolutely deserves the rave reviews it’s received on Trip Advisor! Now I just need a few more visitors to justify another Parisian night out… Crêperie Broceliande 15 rue des Trois Frères 76018 Paris Métro Abbesses or Anvers Hours Tuesday 19:00 – 22:30, Wednesday through Friday 12:00 -15:00 and 19:00 – 22:30. Traditional French Food - Creperie Broceliande - Paris - Ile-de-France

INDULGE IN AN AUTHENTIC FRENCH CRÊPE FROM ONE OF THE MOST RENOWNED CRÊPERIES IN THE CITY. Originating in Brittany, France during the 13th century, crêpes and galettes (savory crêpes) are traditionally made with buckwheat flour and no rising agent in the batter, making them perfectly thin and crispy. They gained popularity in the 20th century, due to how cheap they were to make, and continued on to become a beloved tenement of French cuisine and culture even today. Crêpes are typically eaten for lunch or dinner, and filled with anything from Nutella and fruit to ham and cheese – limitless delicious possibilities. Good crêpes can be found at just about every street corner in Paris, but if you stop by one of the 9 best crêperies in the city, you’ll be in for a real treat. LA CRÊPERIE DE JOSSELIN La Crêperie de Josselin, while being a bit of a tourist hotspot, is still widely regarded as a very authentic crêperie – it’s even lauded by David Lebovitz himself. You can eat in the old-school brasserie style dining room with its wooden beam ceilings and antique decor, or grab a table on the outdoor terrace to people watch to your heart’s content. Josselin offers countless sweet and savory options, as well as traditional Breton cider to go along with whatever flavors you choose. LA CRÊPERIE BRETONNE Even located on a street full of crêperies, La Crêperie Bretonne stands a cut above the rest. This is more of a local spot, using very traditional preparation methods for their fresh, made-to-order crêpes. If the endless topping options get overwhelming, just opt for their “crêpe of the day” and you’re bound to be satisfied. Gluten-free and vegan options are also available, great for those with dietary restrictions. LA CRÊPERIE DU CLOWN Another locally loved spot, La Crêperie du Clown is always busy and always worth the wait. The menu is full of sweet and savory combinations to fulfill any craving you might have, and the prices are quite affordable. Oh, and clown-averse people need not worry – the theme isn’t overbearing. CRÊPERIE LITTLE BREIZH If a friendly, cozy atmosphere is what you’re after, look no further than Crêperie Little Breizh. Decorated with Breton memorabilia, this traditional spot serves up imaginative twists on classic flavors. The buckwheat flour used is milled specially for the restaurant, and only the highest quality ingredients are available. Get a crêpe off the menu or build your own – whatever you do, make sure to try the butter caramel sauce! LA CRÈME DE PARIS La Crème de Paris is a quaint, yet popular café near Galeries Lafayette serving waffles, or gaufres, and a selection of crêpes prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Come for lunch to take advantage of the specials, and don’t skip on the house-made ice cream for the perfect dessert crêpe topping. There are also plenty of gluten-free and vegan options available, so everyone can indulge at La Crème de Paris. CRÊPERIE BROCÉLIANDE Crêperie Brocéliande is a local neighborhood hotspot with rustic decor and intimately spaced tables. You might want to make reservations before you go, as it does get quite busy, but the friendly staff will never make you feel rushed. Try the highly recommended traditional Breton cider with your crêpe(s) of choice, all for a remarkably affordable price. CHEZ ALAIN MIAM MIAM This establishment may be best known for its sandwiches, but Chez Alain Miam Miam makes mouthwatering crêpes as well. In fact, you can even get a buckwheat crêpe filled with the same ingredients as the famously sought after sandwiches – a coincidentally gluten-free lunch! There might be a long wait, but it’s well worth it for a taste of Chef Alain’s culinary masterpieces, including plenty of flavorful vegetarian options. BREIZH CAFÉ Run by Brittany born Bertrand Larcher, Breizh Café originally opened in Japan before branching out to Paris locations. As such, the menu features inventive, Japanese-inspired flavor combinations you won’t find in any other crêperie. The restaurant also serves an impressive selection of artisanal ciders, as well as a wide range of vegan and vegetarian options. Don’t forget to check out the épicerie next door, selling jams, cheeses, and other artisanal goods. AU P’TIT GREC Opened in 1981, Au P’tit Grec serves giant crêpes for super cheap, made with just about any ingredient you can think of (all fresh and locally sourced!). There’s always a long line, but its popularity is a testament to how incredibly delicious these crêpes are. Au P’tit Grec is also a great option for vegetarians, since there are so many non-meat filling options available. MEGHAN ST.
