CopperBay Cocktail Bar | Paris Weekender

I generally don’t like cocktail bars in Paris. They tend to be pretentious and overpriced. In fact, I can’t think of any cocktails bars here I actually do like… that is, until now. On Saturday, as I was already in the neighborhood, I stopped by CopperBay in the 10th arr. with a very specific purpose. I had read an article a while back on the best cocktails in Paris and one in particular caught my eye. CopperBay, a relatively new (2-year-old) bar by Strasbourg Saint-Denis metro, had concocted a drink called De La Bretagne, from Brittany. If you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time, you know I’m a bit obsessed with Brittany. Of course I had to try this drink. I don’t even remember now what was in it but I imagine some sort of whiskey, cider, caramel mix? So I announced to the bartender upon my arrival that I was on a mission, and she seemed intrigued and very keen on helping me. But alas, their drinks menu is seasonal (a positive thing under most other circumstances) and the De La Bretagne was no longer on the menu. I was a bit distraught, but Aurélie (whom I soon found out was not just a bartender but co-owner of the bar) was very encouraging and convinced me that I should try another drink instead. She said she was actually the creator of De La Bretagne, as she herself is from the Morbihan. My instinctive reaction was “moi aussi” although that’s clearly not true–but renting a house there and spending a month or two there each year qualifies me as more “from the Morbihan” than other Americans, for sure. I proceeded to take a seat at the bar, which not surprisingly is jazzed up in copper. I ordered the Malgache Swizzle, a mix of rum, pineapple and spices, among other ingredients. It did have a touch of Brittany in it, as the rum was infused with grilled sarrasin (the grain that is used for galettes, or salty crêpes). It was topped off with dried pineapple and raisins. Ridiculously yummy and refreshing. I spoke with Aurélie for a while. It’s rare you find a cocktail bar in Paris where you’re met with such a warm welcome. CopperBay also has small plates of food and they do also have wine, beer, cider, champagne and some interesting non-alcoholic options for those not so fond of cocktails. That’s one of my pet peeves about most other cocktail bars in Paris–you’re lucky to have one bubbly option but it’s rare you can find wine. You can see CopperBay’s food & drink menu here. I may not be frequenting the other cocktail bars too often (though please send me suggestions if you have any must-try’s!) But I will definitely be back to CopperBay. CopperBay, Paris, France - Bar Review | Condé Nast Traveler

First impression? The marine-inspired decor makes this unpretentious spot feel like vacation: shades of blue and green, ropes draped from the ceiling (in between the requisite Edison bulbs), and wooden ores hung as wall art. With various seating options from the bar, to small island tables and a backroom that's great for groups there's plenty of room to spread out and relax in an atmosphere that's more "meet me on the upper deck for a Seabreeze" than "I'll see you in the dark, cramped corner of that new hidden spot for an unpronounceable drink." Cool. So who’s there? Its location on an inconspicuous side street near Strasbourg—Saint-Denis means it's more of a destination, as there's little else on the otherwise quiet stretch. That said, there were definitely some patrons whom the bar staff seemed to know by name, so they must get repeat visitors. On the night we went, the crowd skewed more male, but there were plenty of women, too—all dressed casually (but in that chic French way, of course) in jeans and button downs, or skirts worn with sneakers. How are the drinks? The menu, which changes seasonally, comes in two forms: handwritten in script on a giant paper scroll behind the bar and via a deck of cards that explain the components of each cocktail via a hefty description and a colorful pie chart. While they can make anything you want, specialties are worth trying like the Oily, made with a nut butter-infused whisky, Pedro Ximenez sherry, and hazelnut oil. They also do a selection of beers (from local Parisian brewery Demory), ciders from Appie, and natural white or red wine by the glass or bottle. (But only one choice for each.) Worth ordering something to eat, too? Definitely more snacks with the likes of charcuterie, burrata, marinated zucchini, and eggplant and rillette spreads (duck, mackeral and mustard, etc.) served with slices of pan de campagne (country bread). Did the staff do you right? On the night I went, there was an event for the locally-produced apple cider company, Appie Cidre, so it was packed, but they still welcomed us as soon as we entered and found us a spot to sit. Since we were sat in a hallway between the back room and the much-more populated front room it took some hand-waving to get their attention, but the drinks came fairly quickly and they checked in to make sure we liked them. When I relayed that I didn't actually love mine they offered to replace it with something else, which was a nice gesture. Wrap it up: what are we coming here for? Because of all the seating options, it's a great place for groups and friends to catch up or socialize with new people. The backroom would make a great place for a private party or event since it's quiet and separate from the rest of the space. Read on for our full list of the best bars in Paris.
