Café Varenne is a neighborhood staple that you’ll want to return to time and time again, even if it isn’t in your neighborhood. It feels like a Paris of long ago thanks in large part to the homemade food, friendly service, and classic Parisian décor. The restaurant is filled with life and energy, and waiters dressed in black and white who seem to always have smiles on their faces. Everything fits together, from the frosted light fixtures and crown molding to the tiled floors, without forgetting the red banquettes, dark woods, and walls covered with vintage signs and posters. Be sure to take an extra look at the bar filled with a beautiful collection of bottles – it’s just Paris. Seeking more spots which will make you feel like you stepped back in time or onto the set of a movie? See our picks for the most “Classic Paris” places. Thanks to the excellent food, atmosphere, and service, you’ll find the terrace crowded rain or shine, in the heat of summer or during the coldest winter months. Owners, husband and wife team Sylvain and Agnès Didier, do a wonderful job making everyone feel welcome at Café Varenne. The menu changes slightly twice a year to feature seasonal dishes. In the winter, we love the onion soup that comes with an entire bowl of cheese. In the warmer months, there’s nothing better than the cold ratatouille with a poached egg and a glass of ice-cold rosé. No matter the season, you’ll always find French bistro classics like duck confit and roasted chicken that come with a heaping side of hand-cut, homemade fries. One of Café Varenne’s greatest strengths is taking a simple dish like oeufs mayonnaise and making them truly outstanding. Café Varenne is a great place to start the day with a strong coffee. We also love it for lunch – no matter how crowded it is, the wait never seems to be more than five or ten minutes. They have an excellent selection of wine, which we recommend enjoying en terrasse. It really is a great Left Bank spot to have on your Paris list. Café Varenne is open 7:30am – 10:30pm Monday – Friday and 9:00am – 8:00pm Saturday. Café Varenne is closed Sundays. Dinner at Café Varenne in Paris - Blog About Paris, Food & Travel

Café Varenne, my favourite bistro in Paris, a true gem, far away from the hustle and bustle yet very centrally located in Paris most beautiful area, the 7th arrondissement. When I last year moved to Rue de Varenne in Paris, this bistro in the corner quick became THE place where I often had dinners in the evenings and lunch on the weekends. As I’ve mentioned before, I love their food, made with fresh ingredients, always fait maison, their desserts that are always homemade and ofcourse the most important, their adorable staff! Last Monday me and my friend Anne went there for dinner. I was quite surprised all the tables were empty as this is never the case at Café Varenne in the evening (alway crowded and reserved tables) BUT France was playing in the WorldCup, so no wonder ;-) The plate I had the first time eating at Café Varenne last year was the salmon tartar (bio) so guess how happy I got when I saw they’ve put it back into the menu again :-) Scottish salmon tartar on a bed with haricots vertes, chopped tomatoes topped with parsley and slices of lemon. So simple, fresh and yet so delicous! And very healthy ;-) The dessert is always the highlight of the dinner, and when you are two the bonus is you can enjoy two different desserts! Anne went for the Tropezienne from Gérard Mulot while I ordered the Charlotte fait maison (homemade) that we split and shared. Double joy at its best! I love Tropezienne and I must admit I’ve often been dissapointed when I’ve tried different pastry shops versions. This one, delivered from Gérard Mulot‘s pâtisserie in St Germain was heavenly! The most delicious Tropezienne I’ve ever had. Lèger (light) pastry cream as filling in a soft brioche sprinkled with pearl sugar…. The Charlotte was exquisite..ladyfingers around a lemon and red berry mousse topped with fresh strawberries and redcurrants….
